This is the classic version of Chembalancer that teaches you how to balance equations for the first time. To play it, just press the "Start Game" button above. To play the other versions, click here.
Teachers:
Classic Chembalancer is for students who are learning to balance equations for the first time. If you wish to purchase a version without Google advertisements, please go to http://funbasedlearning.com/purchase.
Marking: You can either have them show you the finish screen and mark it as complete or have them fill out this worksheet.
When I had orginally written this as a little VB program it worked really well (ie. all my grade 9 students understood
how to balance equations in an hour). In the follow up class, everyone was able to
balance equations using pencil and paper ... they just drew diagrams using the same heuristic they had
learned playing the game. In that follow up class, I explained that the explicit 1 in front of a molecule (ex. 1 H2O) was sometimes dropped (ex. 1 H20 is the same as H2O) the same way
that 1 car is the same as a car, the 1 is implied.
Troubleshooting: Chembalancer requires Internet Explorer, Safari, or Firefox. If nothing happens when you click the "Start Game" button, then you need to tell Internet Explorer to allow the game to run script. Look near the top of Internet Explorer for a message saying "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options...". Click the message and pick "Allowed Blocked Content". Then "Yes" on the dialog box to allow the active content, then try the "Start Game" button again.
